Sunken City
March 12 through April 5, 2004
Sunken City
is comprised of a series of watercolor and ink illustrations depicting a post-apocalyptic city submerged under water. With an intense color palette and uncompromising attention to detail, he merges ancient civilizations and philosophies with present and futuristic societies. His subtle layering of collage incorporates mostly historical and religious text: phrases, prayers, meditations and quotes.
A timeless story is carried throughout the exhibit by the interaction of heroes, villains, ordinary men and mythological creatures all of whom dwell in this sunken city. His tales include dwellers of Babylon, the lost soldiers of Alexander the Great, Samurai warriors, urban legends, time travelers and scientists.
Born and raised in Minsk, Russia, and currently residing in New York, Artem Mirolevich holds a BFA in Fine Arts and illustration from The School of Visual Arts, where he was granted a full scholarship. He has had shows at Figureworks in 2003 and at Galeri Galou in 2004. He has created murals and promotional illustrations for The Wu-Tang Clan, Groove Corps and Empire Records.
